We're in Love

Since moving in last September, we've had hopes of fixing up our fireplace. It was originally a wood burning stove and had since been converted into a gas log fireplace, though the open chimney and broken dampener let in A LOT of cold air during the winter. Last winter we went with the classy option of sealing the fireplace with plastic sheeting intended to insulate single-pane windows. This year, as the frost started to set in, we decided it was time to look into a more permanent solution.

We had a repair man come out to see if we could make the fireplace functional, and after talking with him we realized even a functional gas log fireplace would still be drafty and would not be sealed off in a way to make the area safer for an increasingly mobile Thayne. We talked about different options and decided a gas fireplace insert would be best for us. We called a few different fireplace companies and had a couple of them come to our home for estimates. One guy told us we would need to chop off the lower half of our mantle to make room for their insert. We didn't like the idea of having a huge project like fixing a mantle left over after paying for an insert. The next guy had a much less invasive and complete plan with a custom fit insert that would work well with the existing mantle. We much preferred the second guy. They were booked a month out, so we gave a down payment to reserve an appointment the following month for an installation.

Then I talked to my brother Spencer.

It just so happened that he had a gas fireplace insert with a mantle in his garage from a demolition job he had recently finished that he was now trying to sell rather than taking it to the dump. He came over to measure our fireplace opening to ensure it would fit, and then the demolition began.

The mantle popped right off and revealed an original brick fireplace and chimney. Spence knocked of the surrounding brick and pulled out the existing gas logs. The gas insert needed just a little more clearance in the back, so he took out some of the bricks in the back of the fireplace as well. The tile hearth was cracked and broken, so we decided to pull it up too while we were at it and replace the tile before putting in the new fireplace. When Spence pulled up the tile, he found that it had been resting on some weird cement-like slab. The slab was completely uneven and was most likely the cause of the previous broken tile. So Spence broke it apart and got the cement-like slab out of there. Under the slab was the original slat flooring. And under that was the crawl space. He knocked out a few slats in order to manipulate the gas line without crawling under the house.

The slat flooring was a little uneven, so Spence shimmed it up and put down a new and even floor

Then down went the backer board, thin-set, and tile
(you can kind of see the new gas line coming up behind the far right tile. It was previously in the center of the fireplace)

And we let that set over night

We wanted the insert recessed into the existing fireplace, so Spence sliced the mantle in half to line up with the  insert

This is the pre-sliced mantle with the insert to the left of it
I scraped, textured, and painted down to the line of the new mantle. The old mantle was just slightly taller and wider

Then Spence placed the mantle, hooked up the gas, and slid the insert in

TAH DAH!

We absolutely love the fireplace. It keeps our house so toasty warm. And we love that it worked out so well to have Spencer put it in for us. He did so much better than what we had planned to have another professional do. They wouldn't have done anything with the tile in front, and would have left the other mantle as-was.

I'm planning on painting the mantle white once the weather gets warmer  and we can adequately air out the room. The black and gold isn't as bad at we thought it would be, but I think a white would look better in the room

That night, we couldn't help but bask in it's warmth. Thayne was really happy to be able to play on the floor in warmth. The former cold and drafty fireplace made play time difficult.

(The video simply shows the state of relaxation and warmth created by the new fireplace. Nothing too exciting)

Laundry and Giggles

Thayne is such a sweet and happy little guy. Our days are filled with a lot of moments like this:
(Sorry I was so close to the microphone on the first video. Just listen for Thayne's sweet laugh, and it will be more enjoyable to watch)

Pickle Pickle

On Thanksgiving we tried giving Thayne mashed potatoes and he made a funny face and acted like he didn't like them much. He reached for the pickles, so we decided to let him try one. Pickles are his new favorite food.

Really mean, but kind of funny. This is what happens when his pickle is taken away:

Note- He was very happy once he got the pickle in his hand and back into his mouth

Halloween!

Our little Tiger. He wasn't quite as excited about the costume as we were. For Trunk-or-Treat Tyler and I dressed as our little Tiger's Zoo keepers. It was a great costume consisting of khakis, a hat, and a jacket. Though, next year we'll try and show up to the church at the beginning of the trunk-or-treat instead of at the end and maybe we'll actually get some candy.

Rawr!

Happy Birthday Tyler!

Since Thayne has joined our family, Tyler has talked about: 1) Finding a rocking chair that will somehow fit in our house and 2) How he wishes he could feed Thayne. I looked at many a store and KSL ads to find a chair that would work for our house and our budget. I found an IKEA chair that looked like it would work and sneakily brought Tyler to the store for a "date night." Believe it or not, we really do like date nights to IKEA. We both liked the chair and found out it was on clearance that day and that day only, so... I broke down and told Tyler about his surprise gift, because try as I might, I could not think of a way to sneak the chair into the car without Tyler knowing. So, the chair came a little early, but was still well received. During the night before his birthday, I made sure to pump so that Ty could feed Thayne before he went to work and it made Tyler VERY happy :) Thayne was slightly confused at first, but didn't mind so much as long as he was still getting food.

We had lunch/dinner at our new favorite restaurant, The Four Seasons just off Center St on University, and had a yummy desert of Belgian Waffles at the Awful Waffle.

Happy Birthday Ty!

Joy

Thayne and I spent the morning running errands all around Provo and Orem and finished our outing by meeting Tyler for lunch. When we got home, many explosive noises let me know that Thayne was in need of a diaper change. While disposing of the old, I let Thayne play with the new diaper. He promptly put it on his head and had the biggest smile on his face. His fun ended as I strapped the diaper where it belonged, but moments later Thayne let out some big toots and started laughing. He is definitely a boy.
Then we came to the living room and the torture began with Tummy Time while I did some laundry. He's getting smart. He knows how to get out of the dreaded Tummy Time. He rolls onto his back. We played with toys for a bit and had some good laughs as I pretended to devour his neck and he responded in kind by gumming my cheek. I left him with his toys as I finished a few projects. His occasional whimpers and moans kept me vaguely aware that he was getting cranky. Projects done, I started looking at blogs and really enjoyed this post by my aunt Jane. Then I looked over to where my once cranky baby lay and instead saw this:

It just made me happy.

Spokane in August!

We were so excited to take Thayne on his first trip to Spokane. GG came with us and Thayne loved having her in the backseat with him. We decided to break the trip up a little and stopped at Uncle Clyde's over night. It was so nice to spend time with his family.  It's really nice to see both sets of Grandparents in one trip. This time we started out at the Miller's for a Miller Family Reunion

Huckleberry Picking

 Picnics

I love that he posed for this
And this was posed as well

Camping on Priest Lake

This was our campsite. It was wonderful to fall asleep listening to the waves
Soon after setting up camp we all changed and headed to the water. I got Thayne in his little swim shorts and waded out to my waist. Next thing I know, I look down and little Thayne was completely zonked out. I guess that's what happens when you put your baby to sleep with sounds of the ocean.

Hiking to the natural waterslides

Pictures never do this waterfall justice

Watching the Kids Play

Then we headed over to the Southwick's and thoroughly enjoyed spending time with Grandma and Grandpa, GG, Auntie Siri, Uncle Chris and Yukio

Dropping in to see Anna at work before heading back to Utah
After spending the whole day in the car with only 2 hours to go, Thayne was still a happy little guy
